Faculty of Veterinary Science

As per the 8th National Educational Development Plan, Mahidol University was bestowed the signal honor and responsibility of launching a new Faculty of Veterinary Science, as of 3 October 1997.The faculty has a long and varied history, dating back to 1942, where it was included within the faculty of Medical Science at the University of Medicine (presently Mahidol University) and was under the guidance of the National Department of University Affairs.Thereafter, the faculty was moved to Kasetsat University and was under the tutelage of the Ministry of Agriculture.

As outlined in the 8th national Social and Economic Development Plans, the Royal Thai goverment has enacted policy to promote and support national livestock and fishery development, both for export and domestic consumption. One of the major national challenges in this area is the need to increase the quality and quantity of livestock production. Much of this problem is rooted in the national shortage of qualified veterinarians.

To address this need, the National Council of Ministers passed a resolution to increase the number of undergraduate veterinary students. Even if the target of increasing the number of pupils rises from 200 to over 380 pupils a year, the ratio of livestock to veterinarians will still increase. Addressing this need is the central aim of Mahidol's new faculty of Veterinary Science to assist in realizing the goverment's policy of the 8th Social and Economic Development Plan of increasing and improving national livestock and agricultural production.

Using the National Education Plan as a blueprint for advancing the national study of Veterinary Science, Mahidol's Faculty of Veterinary Science looks to employ modern technology into the field while meeting the academic needs of the students. Through these measures, the Faculty should successfully graduate a greater quantity and quality of young veterinarians and animal scientists, and thereby, meet an urgent national human resource need. The Faculty will proudly open its doors to its first entering class in 1999
